Construction - Logo and Photo's

The first part of the construction of my rock magazine is to design the masthead. From the audience research, the chosen name is 'The Fuse.' As inspiration for the masthead, I decided to think of the different illustrations, colours and words that represents a fuse and the genre of rock.

Initial ideas:

By using the program, Quark, and the scientific symbol for a fuse as my starting point, I tried different positions of the text, different types styles, colors and shapes, thus, these are the masthead designs that I will consider for my final masthead design.

Final masthead:

Initially, I was going to use the fuse symbol as the 'shape' of my masthead with a monochrome theme and 2 different types faces to it because it represented the different sides of rock, that being the sophisticated and the unrefined and disorderly. However, I soon found out that it took too much space and with all the different colors and shapes, there were too many elements in it which could distract the reader from the other features on the front cover. Also, the different colors and shapes would clash with the white background which I intend to have since it follows the convention. I decided to just have the word 'The Fuse' across the top, just like almost every magazine does. The type face that I used for the 'Fuse' part of my masthead coincides with the edgy appearance of the rock genre and it gives the impression of a fuse explosion.

Furthermore, black is a prominent color when it comes to rock and the color purple was on the of the colors in my house style thus, I chose those two colors for my masthead.

* the most important word in my masthead is fuse and the word the takes up a large proportion of the masthead so i placed it on top of the fuse so that it took up less of the masthead, hence more focus will be on the word fuse.

Photos:

Then, the next part of the construction process is the photos. Since I chose to include 3 genres of rock in my magazine, it means I needed at least 3 different bands to do so.

There are a few pictures of each artist so I that I have a wide range of photos to choose from and I will choose the photos that best represent the band and their assigned genre of rock. Also, by having a large quantity of photos, I can include lots of them in my magazine which will appeal to my audience as most of the responses said they liked the pictorial element as well as the front cover.

These are the images taken:

Given the nature of the magazine, the heavy metal band will be on the front cover and they'll also be featured on the double page spread as my big story. On the front cover of my magazine, there will also be free posters so they'll be pictures of the one of the 'artist to show this. The remainder of the photos will feature on the contents page.
